Photo finish at the U23 WK2 500m A Final at the ICF Sprint Junior World Champs
Briar McLeely and Rebecca Cole have placed fifth in the U23 WK2 500m event at the ICF Sprint Junior World Champs in Belarus.
Looking controlled at the start, the girls had dropped back to 7th by half way, but picked up the pace and dug deep in the last 150m to produce a nail-biting finish which saw them pip Romania and Spain literally at the post!

They shaved half a second off their semifinal time – and 1.5 sec off their heat time.
The result is huge for NZ, our best K2 result since Aimee Fisher and Kim Thompson won bronze three years ago. On the back of the great strides our Senior K4 Women have made in the last year, things are looking great for NZ K2 racing for sure.

Most athletes or teams progressed to the semifinal in their division: one made the C Final and five made the B Finals. The shining stars were undeniably Briar McLeely and Rebecca Cole placing fifth in the world.
Most importantly, our young talent got test their mettle against the world's best junior paddlers at a formative stage in their paddling careers. Full credit to the team at CRNZ for spearheading a truly massive campaign to take Sprint racing in NZ to the next level. Well done.
A big hand to all our Junior athletes, their families and support teams. It’s taken a lot of hard work, man hours, fundraising and parents hard earned cash to get them this far!
Thanks for doing the country proud.
