Rio Paralympics 2016: Scott Martlew

September 15, 2016

Scott Martlew makes A Final at Rio Paralympics!

Congratulations to Scott Martlew who gave the race of his life to come fourth in the KL3 second semi-final, finishing in just 44.28 secs.

Scott is the first New Zealander to complete in the Paralympics Sprint Canoe, and the third youngest competitor in this year's regatta.

Despite very strong headwinds, the 23 year old finished nearly 2 second faster than his heat time. Martlew stuck to his game plan of cruising to qualify for the Semi, which started just 55 minutes later.

No doubt Scott will have been inspired by the stellar performance of his NZ Team mates who are grabbing medals and smashing records left right and centre. To date, NZ sits 9th on the Medal Table with 8 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze medals. With a gold medal weighing a hefty 500g, that's a lot of excess baggage!

Scott races in Lane 1, in the A Final, scheduled to start at 1.10am NZ time.
