Run by Pacific Ocean Paddlers, the Downwind Series events are a great day out for surfski, waka-ama and SUP. Now in its third year, the race is also good training for Tim Eve's epic Poor Knights Crossing, and the Long Distance Nationals in September for Waka Paddlers.
ipaddle and Vaikobi are proud to sponsor this event.
There are four events a year, each held on a Sunday. Paddlers compete for the best times over three of their four races.
Racers paddle around the Hauraki Gulf, with the actual course being dependant on the weather on the day. The Short course is 7km there-and-back, sometimes held as a multi-lap race. The Long course is 15-19km downwind, taking between 1.15 and 2.5 hours to complete.
Registration is at 12:00 at the Royal Akarana Yacht Club. Long Courses start at 14:20, Short Courses at around 14.45.
Spectators and supporters are welcome to watch the competitors race finish at the Royal Akarana Club. The racing is followed by fun prize giving, cash-bar, and menu.
